Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of treatment of the sick hospitalized because of the bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract. An attempt was made to define the prognostic factors affecting the final result of the treatment.

Material and methods: The survey involved a group of 109 patients hospitalized at the General Surgery Ward of the Provincial Specialistic Hospital in Siedlce between 1 January 2005 and 31 March 2009. The group included 34 women and
75 men aged 15 - 89. The average patient was 63. All of the patients suffered from the bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract, which was the actual reason of hospitalization. The pharmacological treatment, apart from the anti-shock procedure used in reasonable cases, included proton pump inhibitors as well as anti-bleeding medicines. An essential element of the therapeutic procedure was the endoscope examination accompanied by the evaluation of pathological change performed in accordance with Forrest’s and Rockall’s classifications. The period of time was analyzed which passed from the patient’s admission to the hospital to the endoscopic procedure, depending on the kind of the actual morphological changes to the upper gastrointestinal tract, the amount of blood-based preparations transfused, the time of hospi-talization, as well as the need for surgical treatment.

Results: The result of the survey was statistically analyzed. The relationship between the period before the endoscopic procedure and the total period of hospitalization was proved. The remaining parameters did not prove to have a statistical character.
